Craniopathy

Picture
What is craniopathy?

Craniopathy is a type of care that focuses on the bones in your head. Your head is made of 22 bones that fit together like a puzzle. The places where the bones meet are called sutures.

How these bones sit and move is important for your whole body to work the right way.

Craniopathy was created by Dr. Major Bertrand Dejarnette, who was a chiropractor, an osteopath, and a mechanical engineer. He spent more than 60 years developing craniopathy as part of his chiropractic technique called Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT®).

What conditions are helped by craniopathy?

Since 80% of your nervous system is under your cranial bones there are lots of things that craniopathy can help. That said, conditions where I frequently and sucessfully use cranial work include:
  • Headache
  • TMJ or TMD
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (concussion)
  • Flat or misshapen head in babies (plagiocephaly or brachycephaly)
  • Birth trauma
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Dizziness
  • Parkinsons disease
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Speech problems
  • Ear aches and ear infections
  • Learning disabilities
  • Airway/breathing problems
  • Teeth pain
  • Symptoms that are a result of having a stroke

But in reality so many issues can be the result of cranial bone dysfunction. For example, I have gotten rid of chronic foot pain using cranial work. Because most people aren't looking for cranial issues, they aren't addressed.

I don't have any of those problems. Can craniopathy help me?

Your brain and spinal cord are surrounded by a tube called the dura mater, which holds cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). CSF brings nutrients to your brain and removes waste. The system that handles this is called the glymphatic system.

The following conditions have been linked to the glymphatic system not working properly:
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Headaches
  • Sleep problems
  • Stroke
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Traumatic brain injury

Cranial work can help this system work better. I have used it to help people improve in sports and do better on school tests.

How long does it take to become a Craniopath?

A minimum of 5 years of study and 250 hours of continuing education are required to sit for the cranial exam. I am a Certified Craniopath by the International Craniopathic Society.

Isn't that just craniosacral therapy?

No, they are different. Craniopathy is done by chiropractors (and a few osteopaths) who take a lot of advanced classes on how the cranial bones move, function and affect the rest of the body..

Craniosacral therapy can be learned by many types of people, like massage therapists or even those without a license or degree. It can be taught in short weekend classes.

In craniopathy (part of SOT®), cranial work is connected to the rest of the body. Treatments fix exact problems with careful adjustments based on specific indicators. Craniosacral therapy focuses more on relaxing and fluid flow. Craniopathy pays extra attention to the shape and alignment of the head bones in addition to movement of the cerebrospinal fluid.

I have additional studies of cranial work

I have studied many forms of cranial work, including:
  • Cranial Osteopathy
  • Occlusal Cranial Balancing (how teeth come together and how that affects the rest of the head)
  • Cranial Dental models including study with Gerald Smith, DDS, who was the first person in the world to show radiographic evidence of cranial bone motion.
  • ALF (Advanced Lightwire Functionals) therapy developed by Darick Nordstrom, DDS and have learned from Dr. Nordstrom himself .
  • Pediatric cranial work including study with Marty Rosen, DC.

I don't just learn and practice cranial work, I teach it

I teach cranial work to other doctors several times a year for Sacro Occipital Research Society International and Sacro Occipital Technique Organization.

I research craniopathy

I have presented the first research showing how cranial work affects brain function using qEEG, a tool that measures electrical activity in the brain.

Get your head checked

Properly functioning cranial bones is an essential part of being healthy. If you value your health and want to function at your best, get your cranium checked.
